Dinner Rolls
Soft, fluffy yeasted dinner rolls with a buttery golden top — a reliable side for any holiday or weeknight meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2.25 tsp instant yeast
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- — large egg
- 0.25 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp honey

Instructions
Activate the Yeast
Warm 1 cup whole milk to about 110°F. Pour into a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer.
Whisk in 2.25 tsp instant yeast and 1 tbsp granulated sugar . Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until foamy on top.
Make the Dough
Add 1 tbsp granulated sugar , large egg , 0.25 cup unsalted butter (softened), and 1 tsp salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined.
Gradually add 3 cups all-purpose flour in 3 additions, mixing after each until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth, soft, and elastic. Alternatively, use a dough hook on a stand mixer for 5 minutes .
First Rise
Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly oiled large bowl. Turn to coat all sides.
Cover tightly with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let rise in a warm environment for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
Shape the Rolls
Grease a 9x13 baking pan with butter or nonstick spray.
Punch the dough down to release air bubbles. Divide into 14-16 equal pieces.
Shape each piece into a smooth ball by pulling the edges toward the center and rolling against your palm on an unfloured surface.
Arrange the rolls in the prepared pan, spacing them evenly in rows.
Second Rise
Cover the pan loosely with a damp towel and let rise for 1 hour until puffy and nearly doubled.
Bake
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Bake the rolls on the lower oven rack for 20-25 minutes until the tops are golden brown.
Optional Topping
While the rolls are still warm, brush with a mixture of 2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted) and 1 tbsp honey .
Let the rolls cool for 5 minutes in the pan before serving. Best enjoyed warm.
